A Study of Compound Alliteration in Molvi Ahmed Mallah’s Poetry
Abstract
The great Sindhi Poet Molvi Ahmed Mallah is exceptionally
skillful in ‘figures of speech’. His poetry is matchless with regard to the
marvelous use of Alliteration; hence, he is popularly known as ‘the King
of Alliteration’. Alliteration is an umbrella term, underlying some famous
forms of Figures of Speech, such as: Antanaclasis, compound
Alliteration, Tajnees Naqis (same form of word but different in short
vowel, according to Arabic-Sindhi Script), Tajnees Mazeel (same form of
word but extra letter/letters in ending), Tajnees Qalb (Metathesis
Alliteration) etc.
In this paper, Compound Alliteration as used in Molvi Ahmed
Mallah’s poetry has been brought under study. Compound Alliteration is
the type of Simple Alliteration. In Compound Alliteration, the homo-type
words are used in same line or verse. In these words, one is put in jointform and the other is placed in divided or split-form. Such as, Faithful
and Faith Full (‘Faithful’ always possesses the ‘faith’ ‘full’ of zero-doubt)
used in different meanings in context. Compound Alliteration always
consists of triplet; that is to say, it consists of three words at a time, each
word having similar initial sound.
It should be clarified here that always three words are set
together in this type of Alliteration.
Molvi Ahmed Mallah used Compound Alliteration abundantly,
even in rhymes and di-rhymes. Furthermore, there is a beautiful fusion
and amalgamation of compound Alliteration with Antanaclasis in his
poetry, which has hardly ever been employed by any other poet of Sindhi
language in the view of the poetic works or research studies accessible
to me so far.
This paper is simply the data collection of Compound Alliteration
used in Molvi Ahmed Mallah’s matchless poetry. All data collected
herein leads to conclusion that he used aforesaid Alliteration not only in
verses but also in rhymes and di-rhymes.
