Abstract
Russain Formalisam emerged in Russia in 1910 and remained active for only
twenty years. Russian Formalists laid emphasis on the functional role of
important literary devices. They advocated scientific method for studying poetic
language. The Russian formalists described general characteristics of literary
language and tried to analyze the specific devices within the text used in the
language. They introduced the term defamiliarization which became a key
concept for Russian Formalism. Russian Formalists advocated that literature
should be studied on scientific bases through objective analysis of the motives,
devices, techniques and other important functions that comprise literary work.
