Abstract
Unlike Urdu Nazm, Ghazal is tough to translate in English due to its typical form and extraneousness in the poetic genres of the TL. That's why we see that translators have tried to transform the typical oriental genre into English in different ways. Translators like Khawaja Tariq Mahmood have spent all their energies to preserve the form of Ghazal thus have deviated from the semantic issues. Translators like Naveed Ilahi, D.J. Mathews and Muzaffar A.Ghaffar have tried to maintain both the poetic flavor and the meaning but their works are too little to be considered worthy. Works of K.C. Kanda and Sarwat Rehman are really appreciable in the context that they have preserved the poetic distinction of Urdu ghazal in the best possible way. On the other hand, translators like Shiv K. Kumar, Mahmood Jamal, Shauket Jameel, Yousaf Hussain Khan, Dr Riz Raheem ETC have sacrificed the form in the favor of meanings. Their efforts are only appreciable in the context that awing to their efforts, Urdu ghazal poets have got an access to the international readers. In the quantative nalysis after Ghalib, Faiz and Iqbal we see that only Naseem Akhtar and Saad Ullah Shah are the ones who are lucky enough that their more than 100 ghazals have been translated into English.
