Contemporary Importance of Sir Syed’s Letters
Abstract
Letters had always been an important and reliable
source of history. Surprisingly, the letters written of Sir
Syed Ahmad Khan were, till recently, not compiled and
put together. The credit of this herculean task goes to
Wahiduddin Saleem, Sir Ross Masud and Mohammad
Ismail Panipati. Sir Syed was a witness of the failed
mutiny of 1857 and perhaps this ignited in him the fire to
attain freedom through education. The establishment of
the present Aligarh Muslim University was a result of the
same. Unlike Ghalib and his other contemporaries, we
find the style of Sir Syed's letters to be very objective
and free from unwanted adoration. The present paper
tries to look at the importance of the letters of Sir Syed
in the contemporary times
