Linguistic Changes
Abstract
Variation and deviation in all the languages of the globe
is a perpetual phenomenon. This phenomenon is
inevitable for the perpetuity and enrichment of the
languages. Every epoch has its indispensable needs
and demands. If a language fails to meet these needs
and demands, it will lose its ground for not contending
the progressive languages of the civilized world. Many a
language of the world has vanished as a result of
ignoring this phenomenon of variation. Vital languages
keep on modernizing their vocabulary and style and
abandoning the obsolete vocabulary. No doubt, modern
literary terms and progressive styles of the writers go a
long way in developing and improving the languages but
the fact remains that living languages are the outcome of
the language spoken by the general masses in a
particular area.
In the evolutionary process of Urdu the regular and
irregular use of foreign words has been a common
feature. This process of urduisation demanded the
regularization of the process, in the beginning of the 18th
century, revolutionary changes were brought about in
Urdu discarding. A glaring example of this reformation is
that of a renowned Urdu poet of the 18th century named
“Hatim” who transformed his work within a short period
of 26 years because the language, after passing though
many changes, had entered the next phase.
All over the world, process of variation in languages is
the order of the day and Urdu is no exception. The
present study presents an analysis on the process of
variation in languages.
