“Epic poem by Bagha Sing Virk”
Abstract
This research article focuses on an unpublished legendary epic titled “
Bagha Singh Virk ki Var” by Punjabi poet Mian Dara of the eighteenth
century. This epic discusses the ambition of Virk and Kharal tribes to
capture pastures for cattle-grazing and domination over others. The bravery
of central character, Rai Amir Kharal, has been appreciated in this epic
story. Its events are significant enough to be reflected in the oral history of
Punjab including folk literature and folk tradition. The research effort of the
author has resulted in the preservation of an unpublished, rich and rare part
of heritage of Punjabi literature.
