Ego: Meaning and Developmeht In Light of Allama Iqbal’s Lectures
تلخیص
Ego enjoys a central place in Allama Iqbal's philosophical
thoughts. His work, both in prose and poetry, is replete with the
idea of ego. His usage of this very word in a positive sense has
totally changed the hitherto negative connotation associated with
it. Iqbal deems it essential to strengthen one's ego in order to
consummate one's personality and to conquer the powers of
nature. He stresses on ego so much that the fourth chapter of his
magnum opus “The Reconstruction of Religious Thought in Islam”
contains the very issue of human ego, its freedom and immortality.
An Egyptian scholar has translated Iqbal's six, out of seven,
lectures into Arabic. He did not translate the fourth one which
carried a discourse on ego. This article is a complementary effort
to what was left untranslated by him.
