Religious intertexuality in Maqamat by Badi Uz Zaman Hamadhani

Maqama is a unique genre of Arabic literature. It is also called
rhymed prose of a highly finished style. Badi uz Zaman Hamadhani, a
famous writer of the fourth Islamic century, is known for introducing
Maqama to Arabic literature. After him, many writers followed him and
wrote everlasting Maqamas.
Badi uz Zaman Hamadhani has a unique place in Arabic
literature as a pioneer of Maqama. It is evident after studying his
Maqamas that religious intertextuality is their important aspect. He
frequently utilizes religious texts, words, quotations and concepts. It
has also been a hallmark of many poets and writers of the Abbasid
era, but the writing technique of Maqama highlights the importance
and taste of Quranic intertextuality .
The study of Maqamas by Badi uz Zaman Hamadhani tells that
he has greatly benefited from the vocabulary of Holy Quran and the
sayings of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) in their composition. He
seems to be following the Quranic style and interpretations in them.
He has given extracts from the Holy Quran and the sayings of Prophet
Muhammad (PBUH). His Maqamas contain many moral aspects too.
Islamic worships, beliefs, personalities and literary arts play an
important role in them.
Light has been thrown on the concept of intertextuality in the
modern and classical senses. Furthermore, the author’s views and
