A Notable and Rare Travelogue in Urdu
تلخیص
The tradition of penning the experiences and events of travels in Urdu
language came into being with Yousaf Khan Kumbal Posh's
travelogue "Tarikh e Yousafi". The same travelogue is famed as
“Ajaibaat e Farang" as well. It was first published in 1847. After
seven years, Munshi Amin Chand's travelogue was published.
Munshi Amin Chand hailed from Bajwarra, a town in Hoshiarpur. He
quit his job as a Tehsildaar and set on his travels across India. His
patron, Robert Cust, supported him financially and motivated him to
pen his experiences on his return. The first volume of the resultant
travelogue was published in 1854 with an introduction by Robert
Cust. Its second edition, in two volumes, appeared in 1859.
Munshi Amin Chand's Travelogue is notable amongst the earlier
travelogues of Urdu owing to its content and style. Regretfully,
it remained unaccounted for by the literary critics and historians and
apart from two or three scholars, it was not mentioned by anybody. In
this article, an attempt is made to record the biography of Munshi
Amin Chand after strenuous research.
