Mahmud bin Abdullah known as Allama Alusi was the Mufti of Baghdad. His genealogy goes back to the Prophet's grandson, Hazrat Hussain bin Ali, for that reason he is called Al-Husseini. He was born in the city of Alus. He got education from all the esteemed scholars of science and art of the thirteenth century AH. After acquiring knowledge, he continued to perform various scholarly services in which he took charge of Hanafi Masnad-e-Ifta by the orders of Sultan. He was a mujtahid, jurist, commentator, writer, poet, best calligrapher and his poetry also has a special place in Arabic literature. With all these sciences, a prominent aspect of his life he was a Sufi who linked with the Naqshbandiyya through his spritual leader shaihk Khalid Kurdi. The style and content of his commentary “Ruh al-Maani” has influenced almost all the commentators of the subcontinent. There is probably no Urdu commentary in the subcontinent which is not directly or indirectly influenced by Allama Alusi Baghdadi. He lived a short life of 53 years but left a huge impact of knowledge for the rest of the world. He was buried in the tomb of Sheikh Maroof Karkhi.
