Right from the emergence of the comparative linguistics, it
divided into many branches such as comparative syntax, comparative
morphology, comparative prosody etc. The article followed the
comparative methodology dealing with the prosody of two languages,
Arabic and Urdu. It analyzed their prosody in the light of the science
the foundations of which were laid down by al-khalil ibn Ahmad alfarahidi in the second century after hijra.
The relations between Arabic and Urdu are old. After the conquest of
sindh by Mohammad ibn-e-Qasim, interaction started between Arabs,
the conquerors and sindis the subjects on both cultural and linguistic
levels and when Islam spread in the Indian sub-continent prosody was
introduced to its literature which welcomed its terminology to enter
Urdu prosody. That is why we observe some prosodic meters
common to the prosody of both the languages. There are also meters
which are specific to each of them. Similarly, some prosodic feet are
common to both the languages and others are specific to each of
them. As for as the zihafat and ilal are concerned they have both
points of similarity and points of difference. By examination of the
prosodic feet of Arabic, we come to the conclusion that some had
access to Urdu prosody, especially those which were near to the
nature of Urdu speakers. They are ramal, mutaqarib, khafif and rajaz.
In addition there were some meters which were current in Arabic
poetry, but they did not have access to Urdu poetry, such al-taweel,
al-wafir and al-Baseet. Nevertheless there were some meters which
were used on low scale. The article analyses these matters in the light
of the prosody of both the languages.
