Prof. Dr. Mahmood Ahmad, the former Chairman of department of Botany (1977-1979 and 1992 -1995), died on December 4, 2020 at the age of 83 due to cardiac arrest. He was born in 1937 and his affiliation with the University of Karachi was from 1961 till his last breath. He received M.Sc. degree from the department of Botany, University of Karachi in 1960. He earned his Ph.D. from department of Botany, University of Sydney, Australia under supervision of Professor I. V. Neuman, a world renowned expert on plant anatomy. He published more than 100 research papers in the journals of International repute. One of his research papers was published in Nature in 1965. His area of expertise was nitrogen fixation in leguminous plants. He did remarkable research work on plant cell wall that gained much attention from scientific community. Dr. Mahmood completed a number of scientific research projects, many of which were sponsored by International organizations. He also had tremendous expertise on the use of electron microscopy. The first ever installed electron microscope in the University of Karachi was under his supervision. He taught many courses in electron microscopy. His research work was applauded by professionals the world over. Prof. Mahmood trained and motivated not only the faculty members but also the students to continue his scientific legacy towards achieving scientific excellence in the world. The Services of Prof. Mahmood for research and higher education will always be remembered and he will be missed as an inspiring teacher, scientist of high-caliber, mentor of many of many of us and a wonderful human being. May Allah grant him eternal peace and best place in Junnah.
