Mr. Muhammad Islam Gill, an eminent cotton scientist of Pakistan, died in an Air Crash on 10 July, 2006. Mr. Islam Gill obtained his B.Sc. (Hon’s) Agri. degree from University of Agriculture, Faisalabad in 1968 and M.Sc. (Hon’s) Agri. in 1970 majoring in Soil Science. He worked for about 2 years in Soil Chemistry Department, AARI. In 1972 he joined Central Cotton Research Institute (CCRI), Multan as Scientific Officer, became SSO in 1976, and Director CCRI in 2002. He was awarded Sitara-e-Imtiaz on 23 March 2006. Mr. Islam Gill was an eminent scientist and his work on cotton (especially in weed management and bed furrow planting technology) has contributed greatly in boosting up the cotton production in Pakistan. Under his able guidance as Director, CCRI released 5 high yielding virus resistant varieties of cotton. His services for the uplift of cotton production in the country will always be remembered. Mr. M. Islam gill has left behind his wife, a son, a daughter besides a large number of his friends and associates to mourn the loss. May God Almighty shower his choicest blessings upon the departed soul and may his soul rest in peace in heaven (Ameen).
