“Eco-criticism is the study of the relationship between literature and the physical environment”. But this study is performed with keen understanding of the environmental crises of modern times and thus must inform personal and political actions. Eco-criticism is not a new trend but it has been growing continuously for a long time because of the sustained global environmental crises. Many critics emphasize the interdisciplinary nature of the enquiry, which is informed by ecological science, politics, ethics, women’s studies and history among other academic fields. A related but distinct field of literary study, eco-feminist literary criticism, examines the representations of nature by women. As a branch of eco-criticism, eco-feminism primarily analyzes the interconnection of the oppression of women and nature and draws domination of men over women. Tahira Iqbal is a wonderful contemporary Urdu short story writer. She presents the ordinary but remarkable characters living in the hub of nature in the villages of Punjab. Usually such works show a retreat from city life to country while romanticizing rural life but Tahira Iqbal never does that. She portrays the demons four rural areas and highlights the tension between pastorals and progressive ideals as well. She believes that women are inherently closer to nature biologically, spiritually and emotionally. In this article it has been tried to analyze Tahira Iqbal’s short stories as an eco-feminist writer.
