Contrary to the thoughts and opinions of laymen, translation is not a straightforward process of picking up a text and converting it into another language. It was the linguistic, especially the structural upsurge of the 50s and 60s which ushered in a scientific enquiry into the process and product of translation, exposing the world to the complexities involved in it. As with every 'man-discovered' phenomenon, the linguistic approach had its drawbacks and weaknesses. The current article highlights three fundamental issues with the linguistic study of translation and seeks to introduce German functionalist approach, which successfully addressed these issues by coming up with some revolutionary ideas to the Pakistani students, practitioners, readers, researchers thinkers, and critics of translation. It is expected that a reading of the current article will help the readers think about translation in a wider and more realistic perspective, and will be useful in promoting scholarship and research in translation on modern lines in Pakistan.
