Firdausi's Shahnameh and his character blacksmith Kaveh Although Iran saw the imposition of Arabic language and culture following the conquest of Islam, much as it had occurred in other states, Firdausi and other viziers did not let this happen. Hakeem Abul Qasim Firdausi was born in 329 Hijri in Pazh within the Tabran Tus province. He was related to the Dahqanan nobility who held a distinguished socioeconomic status. The Dehqanan had particular regard for their history and culture, which they passed on to successive generations through tradition. Here the key character of blacksmith Kaveh from the Shahnameh is presented briefly. When Zahhak the Dragon King acceded the throne after Jamshed, he unleashed a reign of terror whereby the serpents emanating from his arms were nourished by consuming the brains of two humans every day. Many in his realm meet their end in this manner, until one day it is the turn of the hunchback ironsmith's son. The ironsmith, Kaveh, enters the court of Zahhak to free his son and augurs the downfall of Zuhhaak's reign.
