OBJECTIVE: To determine the frequency of bacterial vaginosis (BV) in married; sexually active patients presenting with vaginal discharge.METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted over a period of 6 months (1st September 2006 to 1st March 2007) on 150 patients presenting with vaginal discharge. All the patients under went sterile speculum examination after taking written informed consent. An Amsel criterion was used for the diagnosis of bacterial vaginosis.RESULTS: Out of 150 patients with vaginal discharge, 53 (35.3%) pa-tients had bacterial vaginosis. Majority of patients (n=30/53; 56.6%) were from age group 16-25 years followed by 26-35 years (n=13/53; 24.5%). Out of 53 cases of BV, 20 (37.7%) were pregnant and 33 (62.3%) were not pregnant. Out of 53 cases of BV, 10 (18.8%) had used intra-uterine contraceptive device (IUCD) and 43 (81.2%) were non-user of IUCD. Only 22.6% (n=12/53) of patients with BV had symptoms of dysuria. Overall, majority of the patients had copious discharge which was watery in 71/150 (47.3%) and milky in 54/150 (36%) patients. CONCLUSION: Frequency of BV in patients with vaginal discharge was 35.3% and more common in women of 16-25 years of age. BV was more common in non-pregnant and non-IUCD users.
