Ranjha and Indian mythology
Abstract
This article is an exertion to trace the commonalities between the characters of dark skinned god Krishna and the protagonist of much loved and celebrated love tale of the sub-continent "Heer and Ranjha". Both challenged the society's stereotypes in almost a same manner. They used the tool of love as a counter narrative to the stringencies of priesthood. Fascination with the dark skinned Krishna had been so awe-inspiring in the sub-continent that even the fair skinned Aryans had to willy-nilly accept him as a god. This article is an effort to comprehend the difference between Aryan concept of Krishna and the indigenous one. The character of water buffalo in Punjabi literature has also been discussed briefly in this context as both had a strapping affiliation with it.
