“Sir Syed’s Role as Social Reformist and Its Impact on Current Era”
Abstract
Purposeful and beneficial literature not only reflects the true picture
of life but also assemble the forces to shape the social system.
Literature must understand the laws and code of life portraying the
basic social discipline. Sir Syed’s efforts towards Muslim renaissance
are beyond doubts. His ideology brought revolutionary change in
people minds through his writings. Sir Syed Ahmed khan played a
pivotal role in transforming the Muslim society from rigidness to
enlightened moderate nation through his literary welfare services.
After the failure of war of independence, Muslims were the main
target of British tyranny. Post 1857 reign brought a huge destructive
impact on the socio-economic lives of Muslim nation. Their culture
and civilization were on the verge of extinction. At this crucial time,
Sir Syed came forward as a savior. He started Aligarh movement to
open new horizons for Muslim community of subcontinent.
Reforming the social and economic life of distressed, disappointed
and poor nation was the sole aim of his movement. He fought for his
nation’s rights on all fronts. His literary efforts not only save
Muslims from ignorance but also illuminate their lives through socioeconomic welfare. He wrote on every issue of the hour and
elaborated every aspect on critical angles. His social services worth
mentioning. Sir Syed was the most influential leader and social
reformer of his time. He felt that the socio-economic future of
Muslims was threatened by their orthodox aversions to modern
science and technology. He made significant contributions in this
regard that had long term implications for the Muslims of India,
eventually lead to creation of state of Pakistan. Persuading the
stubborn, reluctant and ignorant nation to modern education was an uphill task. But his determination and passion towards this sacred
cause overturned all atrocities and brought a new wave of life in his
mission. He accomplished his expedition of Muslim social
renaissance through his pen. Today, as we find our nation amidst
divergent schools of thought, when one segment of society is bent
towards ultra-liberalism & appear to blindly follow western
civilization, when discrimination on the basis of gender, violation of
human rights, linguistic discrepancies and religious fanaticism are
rampant, there is a dire need to understand the thoughts and ideology
of Sir Syed. Men like Syed Sahib are born once in decades, or
perhaps, centuries! Are we ready to wait centuries for that to happen
or reformulate our thought in-line with modern demands, choice is
ours!
