Abstract
Majeed Amjad is a significant poet of modern Urdu verse, whose work covers a wide variety of subjects and techniques. His linguistic consciousness is unique and he chooses his diction according to the theme he elaborates in a particular poem. Thus, a lot of variation is at work in his poetry. Besides a highly Persianized expression in some places, he uses a purely Hindi vocabulary for some poems and also makes use of words from vernacular, as well as slang. This article explores the artistic use of Punjabi and Hindi diction in Majeed Amjad’s poetry.
