"Naya Qanoon" in the Context of Government of India Act 1935
Abstract
Manto enjoys a very high status in terms of Urdu short story writing. He had
a difficult life. He was blessed with the ability to have deep observation. The bitter
experiences of life turned Manto into a great short story writer. He had the ability to
grasp the reality. His wisdom could instantly judge a person's character. He was never
reluctant to present reality. That's why he had to encounter social difficulties. He was
also held accountable by the law because of his practice of fiercely presenting truth.
His short story, 'The New Constitution' depicts the life experiences of working class.
The protagonist of this story condemns GOIA 1935. This act is presented as a mere
illusion to the Indians which could not reform their lives. The news of the enforcement
of this Act made Indians particularly Muslims quite hopeful about their future. It
ignited a hope in the hearts of the poor that they might get rid of their miserable life
controlled by the British. The Indians waited, impatiently, for the enforcement of this
Act. It was only after the imprisonment of the protagonist, after a quarrel with an
Englishman, that he realized the grave reality that this New Constitution was nothing
but a mirage.
