TOTEMISM: SOCIO-LINGUISTIC STUDY OF AN IDEA RELATED TO ANIMALS

Abstract
This paper is the research study of social life in a society which pertains to pre-historic age. Totemism is a symbolic belief in which a person, family or clan sets up their relationship with its parts, things and living beings, which form part of their life and come into contact in one way or the other; those actors are called totems. The actors which come into contact with a person can be animals or living things, viz: a plant, insect, bird or even a mythical entity. They have their own language of understanding each other; may be through rituals, marriages, ethics, sacred beliefs, good or bad omens etc. Such beliefs or festivals were prevalent among many centuries viz: Africa, America, Malaysia, India, etc. Many of those totems have been discussed in this paper, which now a days are present in the pages of past history. But those are rich past of the Nations which need to be explored and presented for refreshment of the minds of present generation so that their knowledge could be enhanced.
