Abstract
The conflict in Afghanistan remains unsolved though the Soviets withdrew in
1989 and the Americans are planning to go by 2014. The Cold War’s
ideological clash morphosed into tribal and ethnic factionalism when it
landed in Afghanistan. The US led-NATO invasion in 2001 has achieved
little in its ten years of “war against terror.” Now the hard option has been
abandoned in favour of talks with the insurgents. The Doha process has
begun. This study analyses the possibility of reconciliation among the fighting
factions and stresses that the reconciliation process be led by the Afghans
without interference from external forces. The study suggests practical
measures to bring all stakeholders in this political approach.
