Intellectual Influence of Shah Inayat on Shah Latif`s thought
Abstract
Shah Inayatullah Shaheed a Sufi by nature was a great reformer
of early eighteenth century in Sindh. He distributed all his Jagir (fiefdom)
to poor peasant commumity of lower Sindh of that time. His popular
slogan which became key reforming act later was that the real
ownership of land belongs to those who rear the land; every farmer has
full right over his land which he cultivates. In those early days, Sindh was
governed by different Mughul emperors who assigned political powers
in different parts of Sindh. The lower Sindh remained under the rule of
Nawab Azam khan while Northern Sindh was under the rule of the
Abbasis who had rights to impose and collect the taxes on revenue
generation.Shah Inayatullah Sufi introduced agro-economic reforms to
maintain the financial condition of poor farmers. Because of his land
reforms initiatives, he got immense popularity among peasants of that
area. The feudals and Pirs (spiritual leaders) got threatened due to these
reforms. Their economic dominancy was faced with a great danger. They
started many conspiracies to hamper these reforms to continue the
status quo. Under this situation, the time came when Nawab Azam and
Army of Kalhora fought a full length war for four months at Jhoke sharif.
Being tired, the Kalhoras and also Mughuls approached Shah Innyatullah
for immediate cessation of war and for restoration of peace. But it was a
great conspiracy where Shah Inayat and his associates were martyred
on 7th January 1718. The Shah of Bhit was very much influenced by the
Sufi Shah Inayatullah, who was his contemporary. This article tries to
prove the intellectual relationship of Shah Abdul latif with Shah Inayat.
