Abstract
This article offers a review of the Urdu magazines which flourished during the 20th century and witnessed their rise and fall during this period. A number of Urdu magazines rendered valuable services in the intellectual and creative field and encouraged numerous writers and poets, who, later on, became a symbol for upcoming generation for writers. The owners as well as editors of these magazines were those hard working personalities whose untiring efforts paved a clear path for the aspiring writers, who wanted to be an effective part of a creative world. Moreover, those who contributed to this magazine of 20th century started from Lahore in April 1901 in the shape of a literary magazine entitled “Makhzan”. After wards, during the first decade of 20th century (1900 to 1910 A.D), 50 literary magazines were brought out from various cities of India. Amongst them 10 magazines stood at the top and gained a wide popularity in the literary circles and general readers too. This inspiring journey of Urdu magazines continued till the end of 20th century. For the convenience of readers, a decade-wise detail of the Urdu magazines has been given in this article, which will also prove very helping for those who aspire to contribute more towards the under discussion.
