Abstract
Urdu poetry is a reflection of the Sub-continent's environment and culture. Its poets had witnessed the turbulent times of 1857 and the effects of these events naturally found their way in Urdu verse. As the poet's conscience is far more sensitive than that of the common man, the poets of the day not only conditioned their poetry to the turn of events but also provided a critique of those events with an aim to bringing change in and improving the environment. The debate conducted under the auspices of Anjuman Punjab gave a new color to the modern poetry. The poems beautifully captured natural scenes, sentimental feelings and heartfelt emotions. These modern trends are similar in tone and spirit to those of the Aligarh Movement. The national spirit had taken root in the heart and soul of poets everywhere. Just as the poets affiliated with the Aligarh Movement imbibed feelings of collective good and patiently thought out plans, poets elsewhere also began to liberally discuss the problems of the day. Moreover, they attempted to propose a logical solution to those problems.
