Abstract
Objective: To detect in vitro efficacy of antimicrobials Quinupristin-dalfopristin and linezolid against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) isolates . Methodology: One hundred MRSA isolates at the department of Microbiology, Armed Forces Institute of Pathology (AFIP), Rawalpindi and department of Microbiology, Army Medical College (AMC), Rawalpindi, were studied. MRSA were identified by using 1µg oxacillin disk and confirmed by Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for mecA gene. MRSA isolates were then tested against Linezolid & Quinupristin-dalfopristin disc using disk diffusion method, as per CLSI guidelines. After over night incubation at 35+oC zone of inhibition around the disc was read and interpreted. Results: Out of 100 isolates, none were found resistant to either Linezolid or Quinupristin-dalfopristin . Conclusions: These two antimicrobials streptogramin quinupristin-dalfopristin, and the oxazolidinone linezolid, have good in vitro activity against MRSA. These drugs are promising therapeutic options in an era of rapidly growing antibiotic resistance.
