Responsible use of Water Resources in the Context of Islamic Teachings
Abstract
Water is the greatest blessing of Allah Almighty and the basic necessity of life. Islam directs us to show complete responsibility in using water. Believers are reminded of this blessing in the Qur‘ān from various aspects. The Prophet (peace be upon him) also prohibited wasting water. We are enjoined to be careful even while performing ablution. Naturally, Allah will hold extravagant people who waste water, accountable on the Day of Judgment. Scarcity of water has become a severe concern of the world. This article deals with the teachings of the Qur‘ān and Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) regarding the responsible use of water. The research study elaborates the ways to preserve water in the form of lakes, canals and rivers. The water from these reservoirs is used in cultivation and other use. Allah loves purity and dislikes impurities and filthiness. Therefore, we are commanded not to use dirty water for any sacred purpose. The paper includes a discourse on the types of water to be used for cleanliness purposes. Preservation of water is the responsibility of every individual of the society. Unfortunately, in our society, least care is given to this issue, it is the reason that people are facing extreme shortages of water and if we do not realize it today and if we do not initiate measures for preservation, it would be very difficult for the masses to find pure drinking water enough for their daily use. Rather, as a Muslim, we should be grateful to Allah Almighty for such a blessing and show our responsibility religiously.
