Taqwā and War‘a: An Analysis of Communalities and Differences
Abstract
A true believer has an intrinsic desire for eternal success in the hereafter. The main criterion is the attribute of Taqwā – fear of Allah. It is the core of wisdom and the basis of Taṣawwuf – spirituality in Islam. As a matter of fact, one will surely be blessed in both worlds if only he observes Taqwā and abstains from every unlawful act as these are the obstacles to a peaceful society and success of an individual in the hereafter. The article talks about the concept of Taqwā and its elaboration within the views of renowned spiritual personalities. It also brings the discourse that whether the qualities of Taqwā and War‘a are the same or these are two different attributes. Islam has clearly defined lawful and unlawful acts. A Muslim cannot spend his life by his own will. Obedience of Allah is mandatory. Observance of Ḥalāl and abstaining Ḥarām along with performance of obligatory worships brings closeness of Allah, ensures entrance into Paradise and leads the society towards peace and harmony
