Islamic Civilization and Thought: An Insight into the Ideas of Malek Bennabi (1973-1905)
Abstract
Civilizational Studies had been an important trend in Social Sciences during the past two centuries. Historians, sociologists, anthropologists and philosophers had dedicated their researches to investigate the origin, dynamics and reasons of rise and decline of world civilizations. Muslim intellectuals had also rehearsed to study the present and future of Muslim civilization in new world order where most of the Muslim countries were colonized by foreign powers and later achieved independence. Among many others, Algerian Malek Bennabi is one such prominent name, who is unfortunately not well read in this part of the world. Malek Bennabi with the academic background of engineering, and natural sciences had coined his terminology for the study of civilization. Among his most important ideas on civilizations his equation of civilization comprising of man, soil and time, integrated men, colonizability, world of ideas are key features. In his equation of civilization, religion acts as catalyst thereby affecting the civilization in a very positive way. This article surveys the ideas and thoughts of Malek Bennabi on Islamic Civilization and its relevance in the contemporary Muslim world.
