Abstract
The psychological aspects of fictional characters presented by the western writers can be divided into two periods. The first period stretches before Freud and second period is of those who attempted the psychological approaches much later. Even before the literary importance of psychology, there is evidence of psychological dealing in literary text but this stream took the more definite and regular shape in the 20th century. This paper deals with the literary work of Shakespeare, Dostoevsky, Balzac, Gogol, Edger Allen Poe, Graham Green, Jean Stafford, Thomas Mann and some other literary icons.
