Abstract
Dowry has become an essential part of marriage practices in Pakistan. With the passage of time, it has become a curse, particularly for the low socio-economic part of the society. This situation necessitates thorough probing and systematic research to assess the gravity of the problem. The study was conducted on a sample of 150 married rural women in the village 66/G.B. situated on Jaranwalaroad, district Faisalabad. Data were collected with the help of an interview schedule. It was revealed that in majority of the cases, the marriages were held with their first cousins and the dowry was expected by in-laws in some form or the other. It was further found that the value of the dowry was non-significantly related with marital adjustment.
