Abstract
The physico-chernistry and planktonic life of a commercial fish farm near Faisalabad was studied from October, 1986 to September 1986. Air temperature varied frotrs 17-40C; water temperature 13-33'C; light penetration from [15-27 cm; pH 7.45-L50; electrical conductivity 6,00-6,09 mmollicm; -dissolved oxygen 2.8-13.2 mg/l; total alkalinity 500-820 ms,/I; carbonates SO-250 mg11; bicarbonates 340.560 nog(1; total hardness 660496 mill; calcium 230,35-380.56 mg/I; magnesium 5.11-47,96 mg.11; chlorides 600-790 mail; 60dillni 1029.64302.0 rnel; potassium 39-53 mg/Z; nitrates 3.10-17,5 mg/I; phosphates 0.011-0.059 mg,i1; total solids 294.5440 mg/I; total dissolved solids 2600.4688 mg/1. Productivity based on the dried weight of biomass ranged from 32-1126 Fourteen animal genera and eleven genera of algae were recorded. INRTODUCTION Pond fish culture provides an efficient way of turning low value proteins into high quality fish protein. The availability or ruitabIe food and ecological conditions for the fish in the pond are the basic needs for securing high fish production acid protein quality. The availability of suitable food for fish in the pond depends upon its richness with planktonic life v$,hich in turn depends upon the PhYlici-themical. environments of the pond.. This paper describes the seasonal variations in physico-chemical factors and planktonic life in a commercial fish farm near Faisalabad, MATERIALS AND METHODS For the purpose of the present study Alma) Fish Farm was selected. It is located in Bismillabpur Village. 19 km from Faisalabad on Samundri Road. The pond is rectangular in. shape (I .44m z 38m) and its depth varies from Z to 2 6 rn.
