Abstract
Objective: To determine the clinical profile and current trends of culture and sensitivity patterns in pediatric enteric fever. Study Design: Cross-sectional study. Place and Duration of Study: Department of Pediatrics, PostGraduate Medical College/Ameer ud Din Medical College/Lahore General Hospital, Lahore, from January 2019 till September 2019. Material and Methods: 139 pediatric patients having age from 6 months to 18 years with positive blood culture report for Salmonella typhi were included. Their clinical characteristics and antimicrobial susceptibility pattern was recorded through a predesigned proforma. Results: Of the 139 patients 81 (58.3%) were male and 58 (41.7%) were female. Fever (99.3%), anorexia (58.3%) and vomiting (49.6%) were most common presentation while hepatitis (21.6%), bone marrow suppression (8.6%) and encephalopathy (5%) were most common complications. Meropenem (100%) and azithromycin (89.9%) were most sensitive while chloremphenicol (91.4%) and cefixime (87.8%) were most resistant drugs. Conclusion: Pediatric enteric fever has highest sensitivity to meropenem (100%) followed by azithromycin (89.9%).
