Abstract
Ismat Chughtae is a well-known short story writer
of Urdu. She herself have been accredited as the
rebel of Urdu literary tradition. Her rebellion was
not only an ideological but also she believed in
rebellion as a lifestyle. Her characters are an
evocation of her rebellious thought. Rebellion is a
way to equalize social inequalities. In sub -continent
al society women used to sacrifice their personal
rights in order to follow religious, moral, social or
legal obligations. Ismat created rebel characters of
women to give a hope of change. Not only her
female but also male characters are rebels of
prevalent social norms and values. Although this
rebellion seems superficial, but as fiction is a bit
larger picture of life, it does not seem that much
odd. Progressive writers association brought
rebellion and rebellious characters in vogue. But
Ismat Chughtae has presented larger than life
character which will be remembered as hallmark in
the history of literature
