Abstract
Rebellious altitudes have been a popular theme of the writers in the history of the
Urdu Short Story. The writer in these stories dopier different kinds of resistant
behavior which pave the way of a revolution or at least bring about a change in
the thought patterns of the members of society. Short stoires written on such
themes from a valuable part of the works in Urdu literature. Manto is known for
his frank and straightforward style while delineating the ever existing evils in the
society. He condemns capitalism, plutocracy and religious exploitation which
escalate and intensify class discrimination. The stories based on sexual
frustration and rage, political injustice and social imbalance are the best in
Manto's literary works. Manto seems to be a staunch supporter of resistance,
rejection and rebellion against the existing norms of the society. His characters
seem to be struggling of a change in an otherwise suppressive or compromising
society. Manto is at his best when describing life's better realities, the complex
nature of the apparently lascivious and lustful attitudes. He unveils the hidden
psychological realities with amazing dexterity and his tone remains rebellious
most of the time. He discards any compromise with the hypocritical trends in the
society and puts aside all kinds of reluctance while putting them into words.
