Abstract
The article is mainly based on the Russian book Iskustva Slova which is about
the critical thoughts of English writer Somerset Maugham. Main crux of the
book is translated from Russian and critically studied in this article. The article
also discusses critics of this short story writer who wrote a very famous short
story "The Moon and Sixpence". It covers Maugham's critical view about
Chekhov, Dostoevsky, Maupassant, Dickens and Flaubert. It also throws light
on the literary merits of his critical composition. The article concludes that
Somerset Maugham not only gives attention to creative work but also considers
the personality of writer as a main source in studying his work.
