Abstract
Semantics is the scientific study of meanings. It is one of the important
disciplines in linguistics including phonology, morphology, pragmatics and
syntax.Semantics covers the wide range of meanings but in this article, I have
discussed semantics with the special reference of creative literature. A standard
literary text carries different types of literary devices such as pun, allusion,
hyperbole, idiom, imagery, metaphor,simile, paradox, personification
,oxymoron, sarcasm, symbol, irony, satire, and allegory, etc. It is semantics
which analyses all these devices and gives us the comprehensive and in-depth
view of a literary text. I have also highlighted how semantics deals with the
construction and interpretation of meaning in a particular text. Semantics also
focuses on foregrounding and gives us a different view of this technique: it is a
method in which defamiliarization plays a key role for creating new meanings
in a textual composition.
