Abstract
Ghulam Abbas is a well-known, unique and epoch making short story writer of
Urdu. He has won highest critical acclaim, thanks to his realistic style and chaste
Urdu prose, even of native speakers of Urdu language. He was one of the
representatives of the realist school, however, in his writing he was always
indifferent any progressive or anti-progressive theory-mongering.
In the present paper, the author attempts to bring out Ghulam Abbas uniqueness
by analyzing his art of story-telling. One of his less well-known short stories
‘SAYA (The Shadow)’ is studied in order to discover how does it represent and
exemplify his subtle fictional temperament.
Like his other literary pieces, here also the story of SAYA is narrated in
suggestive indeffinitve style. In spite of having explained everything in the clear
cut way he tactfully leaves certain questions unanswered. Simultaneously the
unanswered questions generate appreciation and curiosity in the readers mind.
