Abstract
This article is an analysis of rebel characters in Nazeer Ahmad's fiction.
Nazeer Ahmad is among the brightest stars of Ali Garh movement and is
credited as the first novelist of Urdu. War for freedom in 1857 is not only a
war against colonisers but also a war against decayed society. Nazeer
Ahmad wrote many novels to educate women. His novel ''Miratul Aroos" is
worth mentioning in this regard. Kaleem in Taubatun Nasooh is basically a
rebel character. He is aware of the decay of social values but he is not
ready to sacrifice his freedom for them.. Ibn ul Waqt is another rebel
character who stands against a whole civilization. Azadi Begum in
AYAMMA is also a limited but strong voicw against social restraints.
Akbari in Miratul Aroos is also a rebel surrenders at the end although, but
she seems first rebel of Urdu novel. Nazeer Ahmad doesnot like all these
characters but it wont be inappropriate to say that they are the only lifelike
characters of his novels. They are prototypes which have paved way for the
upcoming rebellious characters.
