Abstract
The categorical status and nature of the clitics following Urdu
pronominal words are considered controversial on account of
their morphological behaviour. Different linguists have given
them different categorical labels such as case-markers,
postpositions, inflections, phrasal affixes, clitics, projecting and
non-projecting words, etc. They loosely attach to their hosts and
perform different morphological functions. When they adjoin
pronouns, they do not make postpositional phrases. They make
DPs and mark different kinds of oblique case: ergative case,
dative case, locative case, ablative case and accusative case and
assign different theta roles. The present study attempts to
investigate and explore all these things in order to know the
exact nature of the morphological behaviour of these Urdu
pronominal clitics.
