Abstract
The theory of Dialectical Materialism given by Frederick Hegel was
evolved as Historical Materialism by Karl Marx. According to this theory,
the structure of society and its historical development are determined by
the material conditions of life or the mode of production of material means
of existence. This concept of historical materialism has not only been used
by the Western historians, we find examples of scholars like Taha Husain,
Abdur Rahman Sharqawi, Ahmad Abbas al-Salih and Ghulam Ahmad
Pervaiz in the Muslim world, who have applied this theory to the history of
Islam as well. The unique views about Islamic history given by these
writers under the influence of Historical Materialism have been discussed
briefly in this article. Their fallacies while applying this Marxist theory to
the history of Islam have also been pointed out in this paper.
