Abstract
Urdu Dictionary Board's 22-volume Urdu dictionary is compiled on
historical principles, also known as philological principles. Such dictionaries
require citations from authors of different eras as authentication of the
usage and meanings.
Altaf Hussain Hali (1837-1914) was a critic, poet and prose writer of
Urdu who offers rich and varied vocabulary. But Urdu Dictionary Board
has left some of Hali's useful citations out. Also, the Board has not been able
to record some words although their citations could have been taken from
Hali's poetry.
This article records words, their meanings and usage as authenticated
by Hali's poetry. The relevant couplets have been quoted as citations with
reference to Hali's complete poetic works compiled by dr Iftikhar Ahmed
Siddiqi.
