Abstract
Languages, with their complex implications for identity, communication, social integration, education and development, are of strategic importance for people and planet. Yet, due to globalization processes, they are
increasingly under threat, or disappearing altogether. When languages fade,
so does the world's rich tapestry of cultural diversity. Opportunities, traditions,
memory, unique modes of thinking and expression
— valuable resources for
ensuring a better future.
International Mother Language Day has been observed every year
since 2000 to promote linguistic and cultural diversity and multilingualism.
Apart from other countries, this day is being celebrated every year in Sindh
also, but not with that enthusiasm, in which it should have been Sindhi’s have
also struggled a lot for upliftment of their language. Despite of that fact it was
declared as official language of Sindh Province, and as per act, it is to be
taught as a compulsory subject from class III i:e Primary to class XII i:e intermediate, but unfortunately that section of the act is not being implemented.
Due to untrained & less educated persons working in T.V. channels and Sindhi
newspapers, as a journalist and writers, the standard of language is being detoriated day by day, which is grave concern of Sindhi intellectuals.
This paper is critical analysis of all above facts regarding languages
of the world and background of International Mother Language Day.
