Abstract
The eighteenth century proved to be a milestone in the evolution of the Urdu Language in South Asia. A prominent figure in this regard is that of Ali Ibrahim Khan, a poet, author and historian. He was bestowed with numerous titles and estate by the Mughal emperor Shah Alam. He initially joined the East India Company where he was much appreciated by Warren Hastings. First, he was appointed as the Chief Magistrate and later the governor of Benares by East India Company. He served in this position till his death. He also pursued his literary interests alongside the administrative affairs. Nine of his writings are easily accessible. “On the Trial by Ordeal among Hindus” appeared in the magazine Asiatic Researches published by Asiatic Society Bengal. It was initially written in Persian and later translated to English by Warren Hastings. It covers the various methods of “testing the truth” and calling upon God for assistance, that the Hindus believe in.
