Abstract
Language, grammar, semantics and translation are closely associated with each other. Orientalists' achievements in Urdu language and linguistics are commendable. While living in Sub-continent John Gilchrist was inspired by oriental languages. He played a critical role in the cultural, sociological and linguistics formation of the Sub-continent. His first dictionary ''A Dictionary, English and Hindustani'' was published in 1795. The motivating factor for Gilchrist's contribution to Urdu linguistics was his love for Urdu.
