The Quran and its call for Contemplation & Observation
Abstract
This article deals with the Quranic concepts regarding contemplation
and thinking. The words and phrases that are used In the Quran to
highlight thinking and pondering include “ulu al-bab” (the people of
thought), “tazakkur” (reminder/warning), “ta’aqqul” (critical thinking),
and “tafakkur” (contemplation). Of these words and phrases, “fikr wa
tafakkur” and its derivatives have a special significance in the Quran,
signified by its appearance in the holy book in different forms. The
Quranic concept of contemplation is not an abstract type of thinking,
detached from observation. Rather, the Quran invites human beings to
employ their intellectual and rational faculties to think about the glory
and wisdom of God in the universe and to understand the realities so
that they may explore the ways of life and knowledge.
