Abstract
Plants produce different metabolites and some of them are used for antimicrobial,
fungicidal, herbicidal, piscicidal and molluscicidal. The present study was aimed to
find out metabolites of piscicidal potential. Total thirty plants were collected on the
basis of their availability and abundance around the year from different locations
of Punjab, Pakistan. The aqueous and alcoholic extract of fresh and dried parts of
each plant were used for qualitative estimation of thirteen metabolites (alkaloids,
carbohydrate, cardiac glycoside, flavonoid, phenol, phlobatannine, free amino
acids, saponins, tannins, terpenoids, quinine, oxalic acid and steroids). Twenty
one plants showed the presence of phytochemicals. The use of piscicidal property
of these plants may improve the production of aquaculture by getting rid of
unwanted fish species.
