Nobel Prized Research, Autophagy Mechanism and Fast: An Academic Study
تلخیص
Devine guidance has been gifted to humanity on its creation. The duties assigned by
religion to human beings are for the betterment of individuals and their society.
Among the common practices of revealed religions, the practice of fasting is
common but the commands differ in few aspects. That is, Judaism and Christianity
compel its followers for fasting so as Islam. This research paper is based on the
discovery of a Japanese microbiologist Yoshinori Ohsami who won Nobel Prize for
Medicine in 2016 on his research that how cells recycle and renew their contents, a
process called Autophagy. Autophagy is a self-degrading process that is important
for balancing sources of energy at critical times in development and in response to
nutrient stress. Autophagy also plays a housekeeping role in removing misfolded or
aggregated proteins, clearing damaged organelles, such as mitochondria,
endoplasmic reticulum and peroxisomes, as well as eliminating intracellular
pathogens. Thus, autophagy is generally thought of as a survival mechanism of cells.
Fasting activates autophagy, which helps lower down the risk of various infections
and diseases and slow down the aging process and has a positive impact on cell
renewal. The Autophagy Mechanism starts during Fasting (starvation), cells break
down proteins and other cell components and use them for energy. During
Autophagy, cells destroy viruses and bacteria and get rid of damaged structures. It’s
a process that is crucial for health, renewal, and survival. Further, it is observed that
our body has a self-healing power, in order to activate this power, the stomach must
be kept empty, if Ramadan fasting is done properly it can help to recover from most
diseases. Hence, fasting can be considered as an important and powerful preventive
and therapeutic process which can help to recover from mild to severe health
conditions. This is the reason Allah (SWT) made fasting as an obligatory duty once
in a year during the month of Ramzan.
