Contributions of Fatimah Begum in Pakistan Movement (1930 - 1958)

There are a number of women who played a significant role in the Pakistan Movement and are prominent name is of Fatima Begum. She laid the foundation of Jinnah Islamia Girls College, Lahore. She inspired young minds to struggle for Pakistan in 1940’s. The girls responded to her call and actively participated in Pakistan Movement. The purpose of this paper is to highlight as how women emancipated in Independence Movement in 1940’s. There were restrictions, a women had no training in organizing rallies and protest marches, and still they managed to do the impossible. It was simply because of their commitment to Islam and Pakistan. They desired to see an independent Islamic state. They wanted their children to live in a free Muslim country. They wanted to be free from shackles of British and Hindus dominance. The article will highlight: a. Women devotion for independent Muslim state b. Fatimah Begum drive for this cause c. Her literary contribution d. Her journalistic contribution e. Her contribution in evoking the women of Frontier Province to join in the movement f. Her educational struggle g. Her family contribution for the cause of Pakistan h. Helping Bihar Muslim refugees, providing them her hearth and home, settling them down in Lahore on her own resources i. Leading rallies against Chief Minister of Punjab Khizr Hayat Tiwana The objective of this paper is to emphasise that women of Punjab were aware of their national duties. Fatimah Begum played her role well in awakening women to come out of their comfort zone of family life and participate in their duty for independence of Pakistan.
